Power of arrest

Understanding powers of arrest for a UK Security Officer

  1. Citizen's Arrest: Security officers, like any other private citizens, have the power to make a citizen's arrest if they witness a crime being committed. This means that if they see someone committing an offense, they can detain the individual until the police arrive. However, this power is subject to certain conditions and restrictions.
  2. Common Law Powers: Security officers have what is often referred to as "common law powers of arrest." This means they can arrest someone in order to prevent a breach of the peace or to protect themselves or others from harm. However, they must exercise these powers with caution and be able to justify their actions later.
  3. Detention for the Police: Security officers can detain an individual on behalf of the police if they have reasonable grounds to suspect that person has committed an offense. The detained individual must be handed over to the police as soon as possible. This power is limited to the purpose of maintaining safety and preventing the escape of the individual before the police arrive.

It's important to note that while security officers have some powers related to detention and arrest, these powers are not as extensive as those of police officers. Security officers are not authorized to use force beyond what is considered reasonable for self-defense or preventing harm to others. Their actions are subject to legal scrutiny, and any abuse of their limited powers could result in legal consequences.
