Patrolling 101

What Security officer should be aware of while patrolling.

Suspicious Activity:

Keep an eye out for any unusual or suspicious behaviour, such as people loitering around for extended periods, attempting to access restricted areas, or acting nervously.

Unsecured Entry Points:

Check doors, windows, and gates to ensure they are properly closed and locked. Unsecured entry points can be an invitation for unauthorized access.

Security Breaches:

Look for signs of forced entry, broken windows, or damaged locks, which might indicate a security breach.

Fire Hazards:

Identify any potential fire hazards such as blocked fire exits, obstructed evacuation routes, or improperly stored flammable materials.

Safety Hazards:

Watch out for tripping hazards, wet floors, or any other conditions that might pose a risk to people's safety.

Malfunctioning Equipment:

Report any malfunctioning security equipment, such as surveillance cameras, alarms, or access control systems, to ensure they are properly maintained.

Vandalism or Graffiti:

Report any instances of vandalism, graffiti, or damage to property, as they can indicate security vulnerabilities or ongoing issues.

Suspicious Packages:

Be cautious of any unattended bags or packages that might pose a threat. Report them immediately following established protocols.

Unauthorised Persons:

Challenge individuals who don't have proper identification or access credentials for the area they are trying to enter.

Emergency Situations:

Be prepared to respond to emergencies such as medical incidents, fires, or other crises. Knowing the location of emergency equipment like fire extinguishers and first aid kits is essential.

Lights and Lighting

: Ensure that all areas are properly lit, as good lighting can deter criminal activity and make it easier to detect any unusual behaviour.

Noise or Disturbances:

Investigate any loud or disruptive noises, as they might indicate unauthorized activities or security breaches.

Environmental Factors:

Be aware of weather conditions that could impact security, such as heavy rain or snow that might affect visibility or create hazards.

Suspicious Vehicles:

Take note of any unfamiliar vehicles parked in restricted areas or behaving in a suspicious manner.

Human Interaction:

Maintain a visible presence during patrols and engage with occupants or employees to foster a sense of security and deter potential wrongdoers.

Communication:

Maintain clear communication with other security personnel, supervisors, and local law enforcement, and report any unusual activities promptly.

Routine Variability:

Avoid following a predictable patrol pattern, as this can make it easier for potential intruders to exploit gaps in security.
